Chris is an international expert in materials, material joining, and Opto/PCB assembly processes and has many patents in these fields. For eighteen years he worked for Nortel networks as a Senior Principal Research Engineer where his responsibilities included developing new research topics, carrying out research programmes and working with manufacturing units to introduce new assembly processes. Chris also has a background in failure analysis.

Achievements

• Introduced surface mount reflow technology into various STC/ICL assembly plants
• Developed atmosphere soldering technologies for use with no clean flux technology
• Developed assembly processes for pump laser products
• Introduced glass sealing of fibre feed-throughs for hermetic packages
• Developed new glasses for material joining processes
• Demonstrated the feasibility of depositing ultra-low, volumes of adhesives for opto-component assembly with the delivery of 50 picolitre (10-12 litres) droplets
• Developed technology for lead-free telephone handset and supported small volume production runs
